Samuel Walter McCandless Jr. is a fifty-six year old man who is bearded with long salt-and-pepper hair. He is tall and solid with wire-rimmed glasses. Walt projects authority and is always accustomed to calling the shots. Walt was NASA’s project manager for the Seasat. Walt is very moody. They can be dark and mercurial. Plus, he has a raging famous temper. Walt grew up in Greeley, Colorado, poor. He was a bright and driven young boy who worked for college and his life. He was an inspired musician and very educated kid. In Walt’s first marriage, he had five kids: Sam, Stacy, Shawna, Shelly and Shannon. He and his wife Marcia split and he met Billie. Walt was self-employed, so he worked incredibly long hours, but he needed to support two families, so he did. Walt also had a sense of adventure like Chris. He took all his children on hiking and climbing trips
Gordy Cucullu was a younger member of the cross country team who had to run Chris’s “Road Warriors”. Gordy thought this is how Chris lived his life.
Eric Hathaway is a friend of Chris’s on the cross country team. He was blown away by Chris’s talk of trying to escape the evil world and run as fast as they could from the demons. When Chris took Hathaway downtown, Eric admitted that it was probably one of the weirdest nights of his life.
Kris Maxie was possibly Chris’s closest friend at high school. She was a former teammate who tried to help and console Chris after he lost.
Kris Gillmer is an African American who thought about deep stuff that kids aren’t supposed to think about in high school. He and Chris would talk about life, the state of the world, and other serious things together between classes.
Carine McCandless is Chris’s younger sister. Carine was the same height, if not an inch taller, than Chris. She and Chris were very similar. Carine is very energetic and self assured. She, like Chris, was very into music and she played the French horn. Carine didn’t like the fact that her parents worked all the time, but now she works 14 hour days. Carine grieves over Chris every single day. She was unlike Chris in the fact that she doesn’t believe in the corruption of money. She wanted to become a millionaire. Carine and Chris were very alike, but also very different.
Bobbie is Chris’s mom. She works a lot like Walt, but is very caring of Chris, although she knew of Walt’s affair with Marcia.
Marcia was Walt’s first wife that he had an affair with while married to Bobbie. She mothered Quinn.
